Video Basics
Hardware
Flip (official site) - A pocket-sized, affordable and easy-to-use camera for entry-level video producers. Currently there are three versions available: the UltraHD ($150 and $200), the MinoHD ($180 and $230) and the SlideHD ($250).
Kodak Zi8 (Kodak store) - Similar to the Flip in size and price, this video camera offers the option of connecting an external microphone for better sound quality. Can also be used to take still photos.
Mobile phones (iPhone, Android phones, Blackberry, etc.) - Many mobile phones are capable of recording video, and at a level of quality that continues to improve. The iPhone and some Android phones, for example, can record high-definition (HD) video. Video-ready phones are an option for those who would rather not purchase a separate device.
Software/Sites/Applications
iMovie - Free video editing software for Mac computers. While iMovie has a somewhat steep learning curve, it is very useful for basic editing functions and for producing short, simple videos. If you prefer a video editor that has a linear timeline, the earlier verson iMovie HD 6 (if you can find an old copy) fits that bill. There is a paid version of iMovie available for the iPhone.
Windows Live Movie Maker and Windows Movie Maker (old version) - Free video editing software for PCs that run Vista or Windows 7. This simple-to-use software functions like iMovie in that it has a similar interface and a set of basic editing capabilities.
DoGooder TV - Free video sharing site that caters to nonprofits. Habitat for Humanity, the American Civil Liberties Union and UNICEF are among the organizations with a presence on this site.
